The App for all Card Makers!

As a card maker, I tried various methods for keeping track of my card making hobby. Remembering who I am making cards for, what date they relate to (i.e. birthday, anniversary, Christmas), whether they have been made or not (sometimes I make ahead!), and also when they have been sent!

Firstly, I tried a notebook. That was annoying flipping back and forth between pages, and when I needed to add a new person in amongst a bunch of others in the same month, then I risked being late.

I also tried relying on my Outlook Contacts app, but you’d need to set reminders about people’s birthdays well ahead, and then how would you know that you had already complete it? So that was never going to work.

I then created a manual wall hanging, divided up into months, with 3 columns of buttons in each month: to do, made and sent. It was great because I could visualise from my craft desk, which cards I needed to make next. I could also colour code the ones that were for people overseas, so that I knew I needed to make them earlier so that they would still arrive on-time.

It worked well, except that 1/ some months like July have about 10 cards to be made. It was very fiddly moving the tags from one button to the next, and I found myself dropping them all on the floor, several times. 2/ I couldn’t remember the state of particular cards when I was at the craft store. 3/ There was no way to make notes about what I was going to make, or which card I had made for a person.

I looked for To Do List apps, and other apps related to making cards. I couldn’t find any. So … being the owner of an app development company, what else could I do but give the job to one of my team members!! I’m now delighted to be using the app to manage my card making.

Here’s the current features:

  • Two tabs: one for date specific cards with a heading of ‘Birthdays’ (but of course you can use it for anniversarys as well), and one with a heading of ‘Christmas’ which is a list of people to receive a card, all related to the same date. You might send cards for other purposes, all for the one date.
  • For the date specific list, the entries are organised in months, the date is shown with the day of the month in bold, to help you see that quickly.
  • You can add a categorise entries and assign a colour to the category. I use this for showing cards to be sent overseas in blue (for airmail). You can add whatever categories you want and specify whatever colour you want.
  • You can tick off each card as made, and sent. You can then easily re-use the list at the end of the year, by choosing to clear all ticks.
  • Removing items from either list can be done from the edit screen.
  • Adding notes for a particular card will help you remember what sort of card you had in mind for them. If you are like me, ideas for cards for loved ones can occur to you at random times!I really hope that the app is a great tool for you, to help you organise your card making hobby. I have a list of extra features I’d like my team to add, but if there is something you would really like to see in the app, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun with the app, and with continuing to make unique, handmade cards!
